Niche Productions is proud to announce this massive triple bill of the hottest funk and soul acts around today. Amp Fiddler returns with his full band and is one of the hottest soul acts on the scene today, having played with everyone from Prince and George Clinton to Primal Scream and underground Detroit producer Moodyman. Mayer Hawthorne – a new comer on the scene has one of the freshest retro soul sounds around today. Having recently released his debut album ‘A Strange Arrangement’, Mayer Hawthorne has already captured the attention of the likes of Mark Ronson and Gilles Peterson with his timeless sound. Hawthorne brings with him his full live band for his debut tour of Australia. Quantic – a name synonymous with Funk and Soul around the world, returns to cap off the line-up and treat audiences to a DJ set.

Biography

Joseph “Amp” Fiddler is a musician who has an extensive list of credits that extends across a couple decades. Fiddler, who produces and sings in addition to doing the bulk of his duties on keyboards, organs, and pianos, has played on records by Prince, the Brand New Heavies, Ramsey Lewis, George Clinton, the P-Funk All Stars, the Dramatics, Primal Scream, Was (Not Was), and Too Short. With significant help from bass-playing brother Thomas “Bubz” Fiddler (another member of the extended P-Funk family), Amp released With Respect on Elektra in 1990 as Mr. Fiddler. Although the record didn’t fare well commercially, it was a solid update of ’70s funk with modern production sensibilities. In 2002, Amp issued a 12″ called Basementality on the Genuine label. Featuring a remix from close associate Kenny Dixon, Jr. (aka Moodymann), the record was an even split between modern soul and funky club music with Fiddler’s talents boldly displayed. The Love and War single came out the following year, and the full-length Waltz of a Ghetto Fly saw release in January 2004. Another solo album, Afro Strut, was released in the U.K. in 2006; Play It Again Sam licensed it for U.S. release a year later. Two years later, Fiddler and Sly & Robbie kicked off the Strut label’s collaboration-oriented Inspiration Information series.

Ladytron in Melbourne

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Friday night at the corner hotel – black jeans is the dress code, oops, mine are faded, but the door bitch didn’t mind, in fact she wasn’t a bitch at all. 50 dollars a pre paid ticket with a reserved parking spot for the bmw.. nice one. Ladytron puts out.. the sound wasnt right till half way through the gig, we could tell she wasnt entirely happy, but she came good. Attitude, style, verociousness – what more can you say, this band is cool, goth punk 80s with a complete geek edge that would send you crazy. and they do, but only when your 17, when your 21, your no fun.

Often credited as being catalysts for the current electro pop revival, UK outfit Ladytron last year showed Australian audiences that they were not ones to be shackled by the genre they helped create. Instead, their edgy synth laden art rock noir tempered with classic pop appeal won unanimous approval in sold out rooms across the country.Fans both new and old were seduced by the quartet’s innovative take on future glam, dark disco and pulsating new wave. In 1989 Ladytron may have been the instigators, but it was now clear that they had distanced themselves from the myriad of electro imitators that have since flooded the scene.Returning to Australia this June to take part in Luminous, the inaugural mid-year music festival at The Sydney Opera house curated by legendary artist and music producer Brian Eno, Ladytron will play two additional club shows in Brisbane and Melbourne once again bringing to life the sound and emotion of their latest studio release Velicifero.

Musicians set the Trends

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

ONCE supermodel Kate Moss and her former rock star boyfriend Pete Doherty exclusively personified the intoxicating relationship between music and fashion. These days, musicians don’t blindly follow trends: they create them. The merging of fashion and music is such that festivals and events such as the MTV Australia Awards have become an alternative catwalk. No doubt designers will be incorporating into their next collections Madonna’s boxer thigh-high boots that she’s been sporting for her new album Hard Candy. Already the internet is flooded with requests from fashionistas about where to buy them.

Designers embrace their musical muse | The Australian

Once Hollywood’s leading ladies delivered the super-luxe style. However, with Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Richie all in motherhood mode, designers have filled the void with rock stars that wouldn’t know an It Girl if hit by one.

Andy Warhol Art Exhibition

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

Only a handful of 20th-century artists — Pablo Picasso is an obvious one — have managed to change the direction of art and the way in which art is viewed, as Andy Warhol has done. Even fewer have had such impact on both the art world and the general public as Warhol. Perhaps the main reason for his enormous recognition and popularity was in his ability to create a bridge between cultures . . . in allowing the fine art world to converge with that of popular culture. He became the ambassador, the spokesperson — the icon, in fact — for popular art culture. Mr Pop Art himself. Australia’s first major Andy Warhol retrospective will open at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, on December 8, bringing together more than 300 works of the one of the most influential of artists. (excerpt from Marina Saint Martin)

The Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane will be exhibiting the work of Andy Warhol from December 8
