IN January 2005, the Art Gallery of NSW opened a large survey exhibition of photographs by Bill Henson, one of Australia’s most internationally renowned artists. It included themes present in his work since the 1970s: landscapes, objects, people young and old, The show attracted 65,000 over three months in Sydney: a remarkable number for a photography exhibition. It later travelled to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, where a further 50,000 saw Henson’s work.

A NAKED lass with budding breasts looks down at the caps lock key on my computer. Her face seems a bit sweaty but the light is dim, as a beam transfixes her from behind and a soft glow fills out her middle with tender reflections and shadows. This tentative juvenile beauty — looking lost and vulnerable — arrived in an email advertising Bill Henson’s exhibition in Sydney, the one that was closed down by the police on Thursday evening.

POLICE are trying to track down a girl, 13, who was photographed naked as part of a Bill Henson exhibition that has been withdrawn from a Sydney gallery Interstate authorities will play a role in determining what charges are laid over images of the girl seized by police from a Sydney art gallery. Rose Bay Local Area Commander Allan Sicard says the 13-year-old girl featured in the studio-produced large prints, photographed by renowned Melbourne-born artist Bill Henson, did not live in NSW.

The opening night of an exhibition by the photographer Bill Henson featuring images of naked children was dramatically cancelled after police visited the Paddington gallery to investigate child pornography claims. The future of the exhibition at the Roslyn Oxley9 gallery, which featured images of a girl and a boy, aged 12 and 13 – some of which also appear on the gallery’s website – is now in doubt.
Gallery manager Amanda Rowell said the reaction action was blown out of proportion.
“It’s (the reaction) never been like this before.
“This is no different to any other exhibition he’s had and he’s had many exhibitions here.
“He’s a master, there’s no one else in the world like him. They’re amazing technically and aesthetically.
“He works with the same models for a number of years. Some now in their 30s are coming to the opening.”

Production, dissemination or possession of child pornography
Members of Sydney’s art community have come out in support of controversial photographer Bill Henson.
Henson has been quizzed by police after his exhibition featuring shots of naked teenagers was closed down last night.
The New South Wales Community Services Minister, Kevin Greene, says his department or the police may take legal action.
“If there are any suggestions that these photographs were taken in New South Wales, we’ll then look to see what our options are,” he said.
But John McDonald, art critic for the Sydney Morning Herald, says there is nothing sexual about the photos.
