Usability 101

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Usability is defined by five quality components:

  • Learnability: How easy is it for users to accomplish basic tasks the first time they encounter the design?
  • Efficiency: Once users have learned the design, how quickly can they perform tasks?
  • Memorability: When users return to the design after a period of not using it, how easily can they reestablish proficiency?
  • Errors: How many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how easily can they recover from the errors?
  • Satisfaction: How pleasant is it to use the design?

As interest in climate change and the long-running drought gather pace, mortgage aggregator X Inc Finance has joined the green campaign through a $500 Watercare rebate. X Inc is giving a $500 rebate per successful mortgage application to buy water saving devices, an initiative partly borne out of the group’s experience when visiting clients in their homes. “There are a lot of parallels in terms of saving money through your home loan and something as simple as saving water,” said the group’s chief executive, Jennifer Neilsen.

Tips, Strategies And Techniques

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Here are some quick tips for working the Search Engines for “entry level” web marketers:-

1. Make sure that all your page titles are relevant and focused on specifics, using carefully thought-out key words and key phrases that refer to your product or services and of the type that people looking for your product or services would put into Search Engines.
2. Do the same for all your meta tags and meta description.
3. Make sure your site is listed in all three types of Search Engines:-
(i) Free Search Engines such as Yahoo, Demoz
(ii) Paid To Get Reviews Search Engines such as AltaVista and Hotbot
(iii) Pay Per Click Search Engines such as GoTo
4. Next, take steps to address your ranking by employing a Search Engine specialist. If you would like a recommendation, feel free to call us on 1800 808 800. Or submit your site yourself to all of these above following their strict guidelines to the word.

How does a new site get links?

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

Link building happens over a period of years. The best place to start is get listed in yahoo directory, dmoz directory, and in the google index. Yahoo is easy, just pay for it. dmoz is hard, but keep following the guidelines until you succeed. google will spider your site, but unless its optimised for your keywords, you wont serve any results. bring in an expert at this point.

Homepage Strategy Assessment

Saturday, June 4th, 2005

Homepage Strategy

Your homepage is the page that website users tend to decide what to do next on. ie. it is the most important. It has to acheive this:

let the user see whats in it for them
give the user a clear choice about what to do next
give the search engines reason top follow related keyword links
give the search engines an easy path to follow
comply to web usibilty standards
Where is your site at now?

If you have your website in production mode now, look at the SEO process at this stage. It is important to identify what your target keyword phrase is from the outset, and construct the site around this and the next 3-4 KW phrases. If you have a budget for the construction of the website, please also budget for the marketing of the site.

You should save money on the production costs and put the $ into the online marketing. New domain names are hard to maintain ranking with in a highly targeted market. If you have found a niche that you can hit, you are better off.

I would be happy to talk you through the next steps and steer you in the right directions.
