Internet Glossary

Demographics: statistical data relating to the population and the groups within it

DOC: the most common electronic document format (eg Word)

Domain name hosting the delegation / routing of a domain name to a host’s server computer, so that the website on that server has its own internet address (ie moving own domain name)

Domain name registration the creation of a unique and permanent Internet address; usually through the registration of a company / internet site’s name in company.com, company.com.au, company.com.de, etc. formats. (ie registering own domain name)

Hosting: the service of offering “server” storage space for web sites and pages (Host server)

HTML: Hyper Text Mark-up Language (webpage format)

Optimisation: Making web pages ready for registration (see specialisation)

Mirror-sites: The duplication of a website on another server or in another country

PDF: portable document format (from Adobe Acrobat). A book-like format with added security features for the restriction of changes to / editing of the document

Registration: the recording of website pages in a database: the successful result of “submission”

Robots: programs, which written by search-engines, find web-pages, and record their information in the search-engine database

Search Engine Rankings: the position a URL commands in a list of search engine results from a keyword search in the Internet

Server: a computer, connected to the internet, to providing for the storage of websites, and for access to those websites for people searching the Internet

Specialisation: the process of creating special webpages (for submission to search-engines) in order to gain a high ranking in search-engine results

Submission: the process of applying for the registration of web-pages with search engine and business directory databases, so that websites can be found by searching the internet

Traffic: total visitors to a website. Can also include search-engine “registration robots”

URL: uniform resource locator, the address of a World Wide Web page. Adding URLS is the process of registering webpages in search engine databases

Visitors: actual visitors to the website: mostly people who have done a word-search in a search engine. Can also include search-engine “registration robots”

Web Space: hard-disk space (measured in Megabytes – MB) on a server, allocated for the purpose of storing web-pages
