In addition to winning in the Overall Best Open Source CMS category, WordPress was named first runner-up in the Best Open Source PHP CMS category. This is significant because we weren’t even in the top 5 last year, and now we’re #2, ahead of Joomla! As is stated on the Award site, “WordPress made its way into the top five for the first time. The fact that it was outranked by Drupal by a very slight margin indicates how popular it has become with users as well as developers over the past year.”
Every day thousands of new people are embracing WordPress to power not just their blogs but entire sites and communities without compromising on usability or scalability (as would be the case with a legacy CMS). Every member of the WordPress community, from core developer to beginning user, should be proud to be part of this momentum: congratulations to us all!

Finally the god of soul returns to the best city in the country… and rocks on brunswick street fitzroy
AMP FIDDLER (USA) + MAYER HAWTHORNE (USA) + QUANTIC (DJ set / UK)
Sat 9 Jan

Amp
Niche Productions is proud to announce this massive triple bill of the hottest funk and soul acts around today. Amp Fiddler returns with his full band and is one of the hottest soul acts on the scene today, having played with everyone from Prince and George Clinton to Primal Scream and underground Detroit producer Moodyman. Mayer Hawthorne – a new comer on the scene has one of the freshest retro soul sounds around today. Having recently released his debut album ‘A Strange Arrangement’, Mayer Hawthorne has already captured the attention of the likes of Mark Ronson and Gilles Peterson with his timeless sound. Hawthorne brings with him his full live band for his debut tour of Australia. Quantic – a name synonymous with Funk and Soul around the world, returns to cap off the line-up and treat audiences to a DJ set.
Joseph “Amp” Fiddler is a musician who has an extensive list of credits that extends across a couple decades. Fiddler, who produces and sings in addition to doing the bulk of his duties on keyboards, organs, and pianos, has played on records by Prince, the Brand New Heavies, Ramsey Lewis, George Clinton, the P-Funk All Stars, the Dramatics, Primal Scream, Was (Not Was), and Too Short. With significant help from bass-playing brother Thomas “Bubz” Fiddler (another member of the extended P-Funk family), Amp released With Respect on Elektra in 1990 as Mr. Fiddler. Although the record didn’t fare well commercially, it was a solid update of ’70s funk with modern production sensibilities. In 2002, Amp issued a 12″ called Basementality on the Genuine label. Featuring a remix from close associate Kenny Dixon, Jr. (aka Moodymann), the record was an even split between modern soul and funky club music with Fiddler’s talents boldly displayed. The Love and War single came out the following year, and the full-length Waltz of a Ghetto Fly saw release in January 2004. Another solo album, Afro Strut, was released in the U.K. in 2006; Play It Again Sam licensed it for U.S. release a year later. Two years later, Fiddler and Sly & Robbie kicked off the Strut label’s collaboration-oriented Inspiration Information series.

JKBD007 :: Jimi Polar & Phil Smart | ‘FROSTBITE’ (A:: Original mix B:: JP Switch Remix)
Just when you thought winter was over, Jim and Phil take off the gloves and head out into the chilly night for a evening of serious clubbing. The original mix follows the sonic flavour that we’ve been pushing with the last few releases, percussive, dubbed out trickery that sticks to the groove and leaves the cheese in the fridge…
A :: ORIGINAL MIX :: Solid, Dubby and consistent, great for long opener sets when you’re ready to pick things up and get serious.
B :: JIMI POLAR SWITCH MIX :: Jimi takes the same percussive elements and adds some very fat 303 action to the low end, the result is at least another 20kgs of aceeed funk to deal out.
Coming soon we’ve got some seriously serious tech house business from Jimi Polar and DeepChild and to top it off here at Junkbeats HQ we are very excited to announce new comers to the Junkbeats crew the Disco Knights from Brisbane with Melbourne expat DeeDee from the Smash-Bang hall taking on remix duties, stay tuned..

Mike Callander, a long-time favourite DJ of Melbourne clubbing institutions such as Honkytonks, Sunny and Poison Apple, and Phoebe Faulkner, an emerging sound artist currently causing a stir on the live sound-art circuit, are together, simply, “Mike and Phoebe”. Through a shared studio space in a sweaty loft in West Melbourne, each of these unique artists has been over-exposed to the sounds and styles of the other, while at the same time battling for silence and seclusion amidst the busy street outside and the band next door. Their individual experimentations were often undertaken simultaneously in a system that became as much a sound-clash as it was a sonic tapestry, woven together by two separate sets of speakers cranked to full volume, while neighbours beat drums on one side and battered emotions on the other – Confusing? And somehow compelling.
The result is a concept track that is much more about love than it is about loudness. But the message is clear. Our love is stronger now that we’ve shaken it.
